Sunday morning, August 2, sermon preached by Pastor Brian McLaughlin.
Thank you for joining us today at Fairview Baptist Church! If you are a guest, thank you so much for being here with us. Today, throughout our service, it is my prayer that you will see just how amazing the grace of God truly is and just how free the gift of His righteousness is to those who believe in Him by simple faith. (Romans 3:24) Jesus has changed our lives completely and it is the worship of Him that thrills our hearts. Our desire today is to focus upon Him and His finished work of redemption and also focus upon His ongoing work through the Spirit in our hearts.
“The Bible is the best gift God has given to man” - Abraham Lincoln
“The Bible is worth all other books which were ever printed.” - Patrick Henry
“The Bible is the greatest benefit which the human race has ever experienced. A single line in the Bible has consoled me more than all the books I ever read besides.” - Immanuel Kant
Today we begin a new study about the Bible. How well do we really know this great book? What is our attitude and approach to the truth of scripture? The Bible is a book full of amazing history, intriguing mystery, and life-changing truth. If we are all honest in our assessment this morning, there is still much for us to learn about our God through His revelation found in the Bible. One of the reasons we gather each week is to continue in our learning of the Bible. However, this series will not just be a “fact finding” mission where we simply add more knowledge to our spiritual tool belt. It’s actually possible to “know facts” about the Bible and miss the person of the Bible in the process. That’s exactly what the religious crowd of Jesus’ day did. They knew the “written word” intellectually, but the didn’t see the “living word” standing right in front of them. So, how can we avoid the same mistakes they made?
