Sunday morning, August 9, sermon preached by Pastor Brian McLaughlin.
Thank you for joining us today at Fairview Baptist Church! If you are a guest, thank you so much for being here with us. Today, throughout our service, it is my prayer that you will see just how amazing the grace of God truly is and just how free the gift of His righteousness is to those who believe in Him by simple faith. (Romans 3:24) Jesus has changed our lives completely and it is the worship of Him that thrills our hearts. Our desire today is to focus upon Him and His finished work of redemption and also focus upon His ongoing work through the Spirit in our hearts.
If you’ve ever been to a Bible book store, you will quickly realize that there are hundreds of different English translations of the Bible to choose from. Why is that? Why does it seem to be so confusing? Unfortunately, as our English language continues to deteriorate and as publishers desire to make more money, more and more versions of the Bible are produced. In 1982, Reader’s Digest came out with their own version of the Bible. Now, you know that with their version, everything would be condensed and abbreviated. So, the “editors” for the Reader’s Digest version of the Bible condensed their translation by removing what they though were the extraneous portions. Among those passages that they chose to leave out were the genealogies! Now, the genealogies might not seem like a big deal, but just how important were they back then, in Bible times, and what do they mean for us today. Then, if they are important for us today, then we must certainly be careful of any thinking that would say “oh, that’s just unimportant random information.”
2 Timothy 3:16 — “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
